Roast Restaurant at Borough Market is a lovely restaurant not far from London Bridge station and the Shard. If you are a tourist, the food market itself is well worth a visit just for the atmosphere, but it also has gluten free options. The restaurant is in a beautiful building that was the former floral hall at Covent Garden and moved to Borough Market. You enter through very unassuming stairs and and into a long corridor, and then finally into the spacious restaurant, filled with light from all the huge windows. Some tables have a view of St Paul’s, and others over the market (and some no view to speak of!), so request your preference on reservation.
Although Roast have not had a gluten free menu at the times I have visited (but do offer a vegetarian menu), my gluten free diet has been easily accommodated. The food is a modern take on British dishes, using British ingredients and as the name suggests, they do a mean roast dinner!
On my very first visit several years ago, I was a last minute addition to a booking so my gluten free requirements were not known in advance, but the chef still made me a special gluten free gravy to go with my roast. For this reason, Roast will be forever imprinted in my memory for being the first restaurant to do this for me after six years on a gluten free diet.
As a roast can be quite filling, I decided to start with a delicious and fresh roast beetroot and goat’s cheese salad.
My main meal was a satisfying roast pork belly with Bramley apple sauce and crunchy roast potatoes. As it was winter, our veggies for the table to share were brussels sprouts and roasted parsnips.
On this occasion I did not have room for dessert, but this is an area where there are less options for the gluten free diner. I think my only option was cheese, however on my first visit I was served Mrs Crimbles gluten free cheese biscuits (my favourite) with my cheese. I have seen reviews on Trip Advisor however where there has been a sorbet or one other choice of dessert, so it obviously depends on the menu available at the time. Some reviewers have also mentioned getting gluten free bread instead of biscuits with their cheese, so it sounds like biscuits aren’t always available. (I always have some biscuits in my handbag anyway, seeing cheese is frequently the only gluten free dessert option when eating out.)
The menus are available online (except for dessert) and there is a three course set menu on a Sunday which is a good value way to experience Roast. My roast pork belly was priced at £24.50, so it is not a cheap option, but it is a lovely place for a special dinner with great service. It is not somewhere you would automatically think of for breakfast, but Roast were listed in Londonist’s best places for a gluten free breakfast in 2015, so it is worth considering!
